Overview

Time

1: Buggy

Develop a basic understanding of control.

Students produce a simple twin motor buggy which can be steered via a hand control unit. To complement this, students also model their buggy in Prodesktop.

Autumn Term 1

2: Bath Alarm

Introduction to control electronics.

Students design and manufacture a bath alarm which senses when a bath is at the desired level. Students assemble their circuit and select an appropriate method of sensing water level, and also produce a casing for their alarm.

3: Mechanisms

Introduction to mechanism and CAM

Students research into types and uses of mechanisms. They are then required to assemble models of a variety of key mechanisms. Their mechanisms are the modelled and animated in ProDesktop. To summarise their understanding, students produce a Powerpoint presentation on mechanisms which they then deliver to the group.

Autumn Term 2

4: ProDesktop

Advanced CAD.

Successful use of CAD is essential in this course. In this unit students are shown a variety of advanced CAD features, and enhance their CAD skills through a variety of design tasks.

Spring Term 1

5: Money box

A cad/cam project.

Students will manufacture a simple money box using CAD/CAM. The laser cutter or CNC mill will be used to produce components designed by the students and then the money box will be assembled from the components.

6: Coursework

GCSE coursework project

The final project is 60% of the overall mark and a large part of the course is used to complete it.

The use of design frames and a detailed project guide enables students to work independently whenever possible. A feedback sheet also enables students to check and enhance their work.

Folder work is however teacher led and supported by the use of exemplars.

The department website also supports this course in every aspect of the course work as well as for examination preparation.

In the summer term students will work on the early stages of the design folder. Completing research, specification, initial ideas, and development of the chosen idea.
