Introduction to the personal stamp

Demonstrate the product using an exemplar.

Discuss types of metal and their properties.

Design brief and specification set.

Demonstrate the first stage of marking out the base plate. Students to mark out and complete the drilling.

Mild steel blanks.

Pillar drill centre drill and 5mm twist drills.

Screw thread cutting

Demonstrate cutting internal and external threads. Students cut threads and continue production of base plate chamfering and rounding edges. Shank also threaded and chamfered at both ends.

Tap and die sets. Cutting compound. Hand files.

Handle construction

Demonstrate handle shaping from wood by using a rasp and abrasive papers. Students produce a comfortable wooden handle.

Hardwood off cuts for handle making. Rasps and a rang of abrasive papers.

Assembly

Construction of components is completed and they are then joined together.  The handle is glued on with epoxy resin.

The base plate is screwed onto the shank.

Demonstrate brazing - (These mild steel parts can be permanently fixed by brazing together).

Finishing and evaluation

The product is cleaned up and lacquered.  The rubber design for the stamp is cut out and stuck on with double sided tape.

Evaluation and testing sheet completed.

Overall assessment by class.

Rubber sheet, double-sided adhesive, acrylic lacquer. Scissors.

Ink pad (for testing)

Completed product. Evaluation sheet.
