The Wood Lathe - Used to turn wood.

The piece of wood is prepared by:-

Marking the centres at each end.

Centre punch the centres and cut saw marks to match the driving dog.

Plane the corners down to reduce splintering.

Mount on the lathe betwwen centres.

Safety rules are especially important with this tool as it is hard to guard. A full face visor must be worn, and no loose clothing or hair.

Can be use to shape simple cylinders to make wheels etc. or more intricate shapes such as stair spindles or bowls.

Using the wood turning lathe

The Bandsaw

Used to cut wood in straightl ines or gentle curves. If a narrower blade is fitted tighter curves can be cut.

This machine can be used to cut plastics as well.

 

The Pillar drill

Used to drill vertical holes. The work should be clamped or securely held. Safety rules are very important when using this machine.

The pillar drill can be used to drill a wide range of materials. The swarf produced when drilling metals is a problem if metal is drilled in a wood area.
