8.11 - Cam Toy: Types of motion

There are four types of motion (movement):-

1. Linear - movement in a straight line e.g. a train, or the cutting wheel on the paper trimmer.
2. Reciprocating - backwards and forwards (or up and down) in a straight line e.g. a sewing machine needle,
a piston in a car engine.
3. Rotary - goining round and round e.g wheels, cogs, pulleys, CDs.
4. Oscillating - swinging backwards and forwards in a curve e.g a garden swing, the pendulum of a clock.

In the space below draw and label an example to illustrate each kind of motion.

For homework research what type of motion machines around the home, school, playground and fairground have.

Sketch two examples of each on the back of this sheet - linear, rotary, reciprocating and oscillating.
