Hammer Project

Produce a small hammer for a tool kit.

Students will design and make a small hammer using basic workshop techniques and casting.

Autumn Term 1

One: Option B

Aluminium picture holder

Produce a small decorative and marketable picture holder in the shape of a letter.

Students will design and make a small picture holder using basic workshop techniques and casting  including pattern making..

The product will be finish to a high decorative finish.

Injection moulded feet are added.

 

Two:

Coat and Key Hanger

Manufacture a device tio fit onto a door to hold a coat and keys.

Students work with several different materials using a wide range of processes to produce a high quality marketable product.

A wide range of techniques are used prepareing students for their main GCSE  project and examinations. The focus is on accuracy and finishing.

Students investigate each manufacturing technique and the properties of different materials used making decisions about the appropriate techniques for the materials. Problem solving and technical vocabulary are central to this project.

Autumn Term 2

Spring Term 1

Three:

Major GCSE coursework project

Production of the major project

The final project is 60% of the overall mark and a large part of the course is used to complete it.

Students are given by the exam board, a choice of products to manufacture. The focus is on producing a high quality product to manufacture batches of artefacts.  The use of design frames and a project guide enables students to work independently whenever possible. A feedback sheet also enables students to check and enhance their work.

Folder work is however teacher led and supported by the use of exemplars. The department website also supports this course in every aspect of the course work as well as for examination preparation. (www.the-warren.org)

In the summer term students will work on the early stages of the design folder. Completing research, specification, initial ideas, and development of the chosen idea.

In this term, students are expected to carry out research and experiments.

Spring Term 2

Four:

Revision for end of year  examinations

Review of theory and skills learnt.

Students are given a range of questions to answer and discuss. Sample exam papers practiced.

Summer Term

Cont’ Major GCSE coursework project

Production of the major project

In the summer term, students will prepare for design and manufacture in year 11. Further research, evaluations exploring ideas and some development.
